Boiler Layup Treatments
What happens to a boiler when it is not running matters more than most operators realize. Boilers that are idle, whether for a weekend, a seasonal shutdown, or an extended maintenance outage, are vulnerable to oxygen pitting corrosion. As a boiler cools, it draws air through vents, valves, and imperfectly sealed connections, exposing wet metal surfaces to oxygen without the chemical protection that active operation provides. Pitting damage from repeated layup cycles accumulates invisibly and is responsible for many tube failures that appear to occur during operation.
Wet layup is the preferred method for short-term outages, typically defined as less than 30 days. It keeps the boiler completely full of treated water with elevated oxygen scavenger residuals and pH held in the 10 to 11 range to maintain chemical protection across all internal surfaces. Periodic testing during the layup period confirms that residuals remain effective. Dry layup is the preferred approach for extended outages, where all water is removed and desiccants are placed inside the boiler to absorb residual moisture and maintain a low-humidity internal environment. All openings are sealed to prevent atmospheric moisture from entering.
Returning a boiler to service after layup requires its own attention. Wet layup systems should be blown down before building steam pressure to remove concentrated chemistry. Dry layup systems require inspection for moisture accumulation or early corrosion before filling. Startup iron levels in the initial blowdown are a useful indicator of whether corrosion occurred during the layup period. Layup procedures should be selected and documented based on the specific boiler type, pressure rating, and expected outage duration.
