Activated Sludge Microbiology: Classroom & Hands-On Lab Experience

Join Watertech’s Chris Fox and Concordia University’s Dr. Jessica Loppnow for a unique hands-on learning opportunity focused on proper microscope techniques and the identification of microbes in activated sludge. They will cover:
- proper slide preparation
- magnification
- proper lighting
- identification of microbiological species as relevant to an activated sludge or biological wastewater systems

Jessica Loppnow, PhD
Associate Professor
Concordia University
Jessica Loppnow, PhD is an Associate Professor of Life Sciences at Concordia University Wisconsin, where she has taught and conducted research since 2013. She earned her PhD in Immunology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Her research focuses on cancer biology, including the study of anti-proliferative compounds and cancer cell apoptosis. She teaches courses across biology, anatomy and physiology, global health, and graduate-level nursing, with experience in in-person, online, and hybrid instruction.

Chris Fox

Chris has spent 25+ years in the water and wastewater treatment industry. A former equity partner and small business owner, he has held positions in sales, sales management, marketing, and business development for both global and regional companies. He received his bachelor’s from St. Norbert College in both Environmental Science and Biology.
