Cerium Chloride and Rare-Earth Chemistry for Phosphorus Removal in Industrial Wastewater
Phosphorus is one of the most tightly regulated nutrients in industrial wastewater discharge, and permit limits are tightening. Conventional removal using ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, or alum works at moderate levels but becomes unreliable when limits drop below 0.5 mg/L. Rare-earth chemistry — specifically cerium chloride and lanthanum chloride — offers a high-affinity alternative capable of consistently achieving effluent total phosphorus below 0.1 mg/L.
Cerium chloride (CeCl3) is the primary product in this category. Dissolved cerium ions react with orthophosphate to form cerium phosphate, an extremely insoluble precipitate. The reaction is effective across a broad pH range (5.5 to 10), generates less sludge than iron or alum chemistry, and performs well in complex wastewater matrices where conventional coagulants require excessive doses. Lanthanum chloride works through the same mechanism and is a proven alternative, particularly in lagoon and sediment management applications.
Rare-earth products cost more per unit than conventional coagulants. The economic case applies when permit limits exceed what iron or alum can reliably meet, when sludge disposal costs are significant, or when pH control is a persistent operational challenge.
